Background Details
The Vietnam War was about the conflict between nationalist forces trying to unify Vietnam under the use of communism and the United States attempting to stop the spread of communism. Being seen as an "unwinnable" war, the U.S. lost the support of the public. The Vietnam war lasted from 1959 to April 30, 1975. The platoons were composed of mostly young adults drafted into the war around the age 20.

The Things They Carried is a compilation of several small stories experienced in the Vietnam War. O'Brien, the narrator of the story, tells his experiences throughout the Vietnam War. He tells of his conflicting emotions and hardships from being drafted into the war to killing his first person. He also tells about his experiences after the war through the character of Norman Bowker, a long time friend. His emotional appeals help the reader understand the difficulties and mental physicality's of going to war and having your life changed.
